General information
The laboratory was founded by the project “Biotechnology of New Materials” in SibFU, Institute of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology, which had won the competition for the mega-grants of Russian Federation Government within the framework of the program to support research in Russian higher education institutions, supervised by the world leading scientists.

The project is focused on the establishment of the Center of biotechnology excellence; it includes fundamental research, educational and innovative activities in the field of biotechnology of new biomaterials.

The project is fulfilled by the Basic department of Biotechnology, involving the department for Medical Biology and others from SibFU, and resulted with the creation of the Lab of New Materials.
Энтони Дж. Сински (21Кб)
The project is supervised by the world-class leading scientist -Prof. Anthony J. Sinskey, famous in the field of biotechnology of molecular genetic, metabolomics and microbiology. Prof. Sinskey has significant experience in research and realization of his ideas in the field of metabolic engineering, aimed to the obtaining of target products, focusing on fundamental physiology, biochemistry and molecular genetics.

Prof. J. Gitelson
At the end of April 2011 in the International Exhibition Centre in Dalia (China) a series of conferences in various fields of modern biology took place. At two conferences the project team members presented their reports.

Prof. J. Gitelson presented two reports at the International Congress on Marine Biotechnology, one of them – on bioluminescence in the World Ocean- was plenary. The second report of Prof. Gitelson was devoted to biodegradation in the marine environment of polymers of microbe origin – polyhydroxyalkanoates prospective from the point of view of environmental care, substitutes of synthetic plastics.

Another report on the mechanisms of biodegradation of PHAs, but in the soil, was presented at the 4th annual international congress on industrial biotechnology by A. Boyandin, the associate professor of the basic chair on biotechnology.

In the progress of the congresses’ work the participants exchanged their experience with scientists from other countries, who work in the same fields; discussed prospects of possible cooperation.
Members of the “Biotechnology of new biomaterials” project team were active participants of Russian-Hellenic Symposium “BIONANOTOX-2011”
Co-supervisor of the project Prof. E. Shishatskaya, Prof. m. Gladyshev, Prof. V. Kratasyuk, Prof. V. Morgun, Prof. V. Sapozhnikov, participants of the Young Scientists’’ School -students A. Kuzmina nad E. Smirnova – participated in the project.

EUPOC 2011
The project team members Natalia Zhila and Anastasia Goreva took part in the European Conference on Biopolymers held in Italy on May 29-June 2, 2011.
These conference was devoted to many key issues in the field of synthesis and application of biopolymers. Within the framework of this symposium Anastasia Goreva and Natalia Zhila participated in the poster session.
Natalia’s research is connected with the study of the mechanisms of synthesis of biodegradable polymers – polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and their properties. At the conference Natalia presented a poster report "Microbial Synthesis and Properties of Biodegradable Polymers (Polyhydroxyalkanoates) of Different Composition".
Anastasia is working on the development of the systems of controlled drug delivery on the basis of biocompatible and biodegradable polymers –PHAs.

2nd International Conference on Recycling and Reuse of Materials (ICRM 2011)
In August 2011 at Mahatma Gandhi University located in Kottayam (Indian State of Kerala) the 2nd International Conference on Recycling and Reuse of Materials (ICRM 2011) took place. The Conference was devoted to the issues of production, structure and properties, application, recycling and biodegradation of materials of various origin, mainly polymers and their composites. More than 100 participants from various countries – chemists, physicists, biologists, material scientists – took part in the Conference. Anatoly Boyandin, associate professor of the basic chair for biotechnology, presented an oral report on the mechanisms of biodegradation in natural ecosystems of the polymers of microbe origin – polyhydroxyalkanoates, prospective substitutes of synthetic plastics.
