General information
The laboratory was founded by the project “Biotechnology of New Materials” in SibFU, Institute of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology, which had won the competition for the mega-grants of Russian Federation Government within the framework of the program to support research in Russian higher education institutions, supervised by the world leading scientists.
 
The project is focused on the establishment of the Center of biotechnology excellence; it includes fundamental research, educational and innovative activities in the field of biotechnology of new biomaterials.
 
The project is fulfilled by the Basic department of Biotechnology, involving the department for Medical Biology and others from SibFU, and resulted with the creation of the Lab of New Materials.

The project is supervised by the world-class leading scientist -Prof. Anthony J. Sinskey, famous in the field of biotechnology of molecular genetic, metabolomics and microbiology. Prof. Sinskey has significant experience in research and realization of his ideas in the field of metabolic engineering, aimed to the obtaining of target products, focusing on fundamental physiology, biochemistry and molecular genetics.
 

 
 
 
Main Results of the Project "Biotechnology of new materials"
The six stages of the mega project “Biotechnology of new materials” (January - March 2012), within the framework of the Agreement No. 11. G34.31.0013 between the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Siberian Federal University and the leading scientist, under the supervision of Prof. Anthony John Sinskey, were completed.
In the period from January 1, 2010 till March 31, 2012 in full compliance with the research schedule research, educational and organization works were completed.
The following results were obtained:
The family of matrices formed by oriented and non-oriented ultra-thin fibres was produced using the method of electrostatic forming with implementation of the “NANON” equipment for cellular and tissue engineering:

The structure of the surface of the non-woven fabric from oriented (а) and non-oriented (b) ultra-thin fibre from PHA, REM, marker 100 microns

The properties of the surface, physical and mechanical properties of matrices with various structure were studied. Matrices treated with Н2О2 plasma are highly adhesive and effective for cells growing. The best results were obtained for the matrices constructed from copolymers of 3- and 4- hydroxybutyric acids:

Using the equipment “Spray Drier B-290” for the first time the family of microparticles was produced from PHAs of various composition formed by monomers of 3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB) and 3- hydroxyvalerate (3HB/3HV), 4-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB/4HB), 4- hydroxyhexanoate (P3HB/3HH):

On the basis of the published materials and authors’ results the database “Physical and chemical properties of polyhydroxyalkanoates of various structure. Conditions of biosynthesis and producers” was developed and registered in the All-Russian Research Institute of the State Patent Expertise.
In the educational field two new Master programmes were developed for the fulltime mode of study: in the field 020400.68 Biology    020400.68.05 “Reconstructive bioengineering”; in the field 011200.68 Physics    011200.68.08 “Management of medical and biological systems and complexes”

International Workshop "Biotechnology of new materials and the environment" 2012
Dear colleagues,
On June 12-17, 2012 Siberian Federal University and the Institute of Biophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences hold the 2nd International Workshop “Biotechnology of New Materials and the Environment”. The Workshop will be held within the framework of the project of the SibFU Institute of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology “Biotechnology of New Materials” under the supervision of the leading scientist Antony J. Sinskey. The project has won in the call for grant proposals under the Resolution No. 220 of the Russian Government for the support of research done by the Russian educational institutions of higher education. On the basis of the Workshop a Youth Scientific School will be organized concerning modern methods of studying biomaterials and other target products of biotechnology, as well as environment protection.

•     New biomaterials: synthesis, structure, properties
•     Modern methods and equipment to study target products of biotechnology
•     Fields of biopolymers’ application: industry, medicine, pharmacology, etc
•     Biological products, methods and technology of environmental protection.
Objectives
  • Exchange of research results in the field of production and investigation of the biotechnology products, new biomaterials and fields of their application, the role of high technology development and environmental protection;
  • Development of research and education cooperation in these fields.

  • Scientists in the field of biotechnology, chemistry of high molecular compounds, materials science and ecology;
  • Students of biology and chemistry majoring in biotechnology, biophysics, high molecular compounds, materials science and ecology
 
General program
The Workshop will include sessions with the speeches presented by the leading specialists in the field of production, research and application of new biomaterials: time limit for each speech is 30 min., with 5 min. for questions.
The Scientific Summer School will consist of overview lectures delivered by the leading specialists in the fields mentioned above (30 min. each), reports presented by undergraduate and Ph.D. students (10 min. for each speech and 5 min. for questions), a poster session and a round table discussion.
The working language of the Workshop is Russian. For oral presentations a multimedia projector will be provided, for poster presentations a stand (1mx1m) will be provided.

The first year of fulfilment of the mega-project “Biotechnology of new materials” at Siberian Federal University has almost finished
The first year of mega-projects fulfillment in accordance with the Decree of the Russian Government No. 220 has almost finished. While in many universities supervisors and executives of mega-projects meet significant problems and difficulties, at Siberian Federal University the project “Biotechnology of new materials” under the supervision of Prof. Anthony John Sinskey is fulfilled quite successfully. Prof. Sinskey shares his opinion about the fulfillment of the project in the interview (interview of Prof. Anthony John Sinskey (in Russian)). It should be noted that he positively estimates not only the potential and effectiveness of the research team, but also the infrastructural support and work conditions at SibFU.
 
During a short period of time a significant scope of research and education work has been fulfilled. It is especially important that a number of contracts have been closed for delivery of up-to-date research equipment. By November the delivery of devices of the total cost of 40 mln. RUR will be completed within the project “Biotechnology of new biomaterials”. Additionally in accordance with the Decree of the Russian Government No. 219 the fermentation line of the total cost of 25 mln. RUR has been acquired and almost installed at SibFU. This is unquestioning achievement of the SibFU infrastructure. The assistance of the SibFU Rector’s Office, above all Pavel M. Vcherashny and Sergey V. Verkhovets, is especially valuable.
 
The project team has scheduled research and a large amount of work ahead. This is mostly connected with the launch of a new specialized building where the Laboratory of new biomaterials will be located. The Laboratory will become the world-level Centre for Biomaterials, which does not have equivalents in Russia.
